Orphaned at a young age, InuYasha was rejected by humans because of his yōkai side and looked down upon by yōkai because his human blood supposedly taints his superior yōkai blood; thus, he found it hard to trust anyone. The Jewel of Four Souls or Shikon Jewel was a powerful object, capable of turning InuYasha into a full yōkai. Kikyo was the first person, other than his mother, he trusted. He would spend most of the day with Kikyo, hunting demons. Although, one day, Naraku set up a trick and turned InuYasha's exterior into an even rougher one towards Kikyo because he believed that she had betrayed him. Later on, InuYasha somewhat realizes that, though Kikyo said it, she didn't approve of him for him as a hanyō and wanted him human.
Then he met Kagome, the girl who rescued him from the God Tree. He soon came to trust her as well as he did Kikyo, yet he was cautious with exposing his feelings around her in case the same incident that happened with Kikyo came up. But later on, InuYasha also realizes that Kagome, although is traveling with him to turn him into a full yōukai, prefers him for himself as a hanyō, despite the fact that he is neither demon nor human which curses him to be odd and or strange to all types of things, meaning both humans and demons.
