A not-so-average kid, Yugi is pure-hearted, child-like and polite, referring to virtually every other character with honorifics.
The original Japanese version of the series makes it clear that he lives with his grandfather and mother while his father is away on business, while the English-language version of the series removed what few sparing scenes of his mother there were to establish that he lives only with his grandfather. It was from his grandfather that Yugi inherited his love of puzzles and games, especially the Duel Monsters card game (yūgi means "game" in Japanese). Yugi's favorite monster in the game is the Dark Magician (Black Magician in Japan).
In class 1-B at Domino High School, Yugi is part of a close-knit group of friends: Katsuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler in the English anime), Hiroto Honda (Tristan Taylor), and Anzu Mazaki (Téa Gardner). His friends all cheer him on during his duels, and Jonouchi in particular has become a fellow player of Duel Monsters and has played both alongside and against his friend. In Japanese, the first characters of "Yūgi" and "Jōnouchi" combine to form "Yūjō" , which means "friendship". The "Yu-Jo Friendship" card is named after the word and the fellowship between the characters. Yugi has been friends with Anzu since childhood, and some say he is in love with her. Anzu is in love with both "Dark Yugi" and regular Yugi, to different degrees, although Dark Yugi - unlike regular Yugi - has never reciprocated this attraction in any way. Honda is a very good friend of Yugi and will help in any way possible. Yugi also has several other friends within his classmates, the most notable being Ryo Bakura, who also shares the fate of being the owner of a Millenium Item and being a host of the soul inside the item, and Ryuji Otogi, who is also a member of a family who owns a gaming shop. Also in his class is his main rival throughout the series, Seto Kaiba. |
